tHe Spring introduces the First Recycling Vending Machine in Kuching
Celebrating World Environment Day, tHe Spring Shopping Mall will launch its environmental Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) campaign, tHe Spring’s Operation Recycle. With the theme for this year’s World Environment Day “Beat Plastic Pollution”, tHe Spring collaborated with Dr. Hudyjaya Siswoyo Jo and Dr. Riady Siswoyo Jo from the Robotics Department of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak to create and design the first Recycling Vending Machine (RVM) in Kuching to reward shoppers for their used plastic bottles and aluminum cans.
With plastic waste increasing around the city and yet recycling rate remaining low, tHe Spring was committed to encourage this green habit among shoppers to recycle by rewarding the shoppers with different goodies every month. The RVM is simple to use and it is for all ages. As long as a shopper has a used plastic bottle or aluminum can which is not more than 600ml, slot it into the machine, a token is printed. The printed token can be collected to exchange for goodies.
tHe Spring kicked off their Operation Recycle campaign on Earth Day, 22nd April to try
out the concept before officially announcing it to the general public. Shoppers were treated to a 15% Discount Voucher from H&M for every five tokens collected. The results for the first month of this campaign was very optimistic, with more than 1000 pieces of H&M Discount Vouchers redeemed in-stores by the end of May and that meant approximately 5,280 plastic bottles and aluminum cans were collected for recycling within five weeks and 4 days.
For the month of June, shoppers can redeem a RM20 Cash Voucher and 3-piece sample kit from L’Occitane with 8 tokens collected. More brands such as Sephora, Bath & Body Works and Guardian will be joining tHe Spring’s Operation Recycle in the coming months to support the mall’s initiative to beat plastic pollution.
